The value behind this fiber

These ribbons are made from remnants of traditional sarees and are hand-dyed and crafted by women's cooperatives in rural areas of India.
An artisanal work that supports local economies, promotes fair trade practices, and gives new life to materials that would otherwise be lost.

Notes:

  • Each batch is hand-dyed, so there may be variations in color and texture from one skein to another, although if you order several skeins, we will do our best to ensure they are from the same batch.
  • The ribbon is not always a continuous length and may have sewn ends, as these pieces are leftover scraps given a new use.

Frequently Asked Questions About Silk

What can I do with the tapes?

They are used in carpet weaving (shaggy, loopy), fashion sewing, embroidery, necklaces, jewelry, gift wrapping, macramé, loom weaving, plastic arts and more.

How thick are the tapes?

Silk ribbons from recycled saris typically range in thickness from 2 to 4 cm. Because they are handmade and made from recycled fabrics, some irregularities in both width and texture are normal. Additionally, there may be slight variations between batches.

Does it come in continuous lengths?

There may be small seams between fragments of the sari, as different strips of fabric are pieced together. Sometimes, a knot can even be found within the skein.

Can they have metallic threads or embroidery?

Yes, some ribbons may contain small amounts of metallic threads or embroidery fragments depending on their origin.

Can they be wet or washed?

It is recommended to always wash them by hand and hang them flat, avoiding the washing machine or drum drying. Do not use essential oils when washing, as they can stain the fibers.

Do silk sari ribbons fade?

Yes, they often release dye when wet due to their hand-dyed construction using direct dyes. It's recommended to soak them several times until the water runs clear.

If I soak the tape to prevent it from fading, will it lose color or intensity?

Not necessarily. Soaking it removes excess dye that didn't set properly, not the main color. In most cases, the tape maintains its hue and saturation. However, if the dyeing is very artisanal or the color is very intense, it may lose some shine after several soaks. Therefore, it's recommended to test on a small piece first.

Do they shrink when washed?

They may shrink slightly when damp, but they recover after drying. For a cleaner finish, you can steam iron them and block them by gently stretching them.
